FAQ

1.  What is electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy, sometimes referred to as Electromedicine, uses the energy generated by an electrical device to stimulate the body's nervous system to facilitate pain relief and healing.  Click here for a more detailed description of electrotherapy.

2.  Is electrotherapy safe?

Electrical stimulators are a Class II medical device, and, as such, are regulated by the FDA.  The FDA requires that these devices be used only on the orders of a physician.  Alivio stimulators have been cleared by the FDA as safe and effective, when used as prescribed. It is important that both you and your physician are aware of any contra-indications of use of a particular type of electrical stimulator.  These contra-indications can be found with product information included on this website.  Click on Alivio IF4, Alivio STX or RxTENS to view contra-indictions and other information for those devices.

3.  My sister has back pain.  Can I let her try my stimulator?

As noted above, it is important, and required by law, that electrical stimulators only be used by those patients who have a valid prescription for the device.  This is to ensure that the therapy is appropriate for that patient, and that the patient has no contra-indications that would preclude use of an electrical stimulator.

4.  How does electrical stimulation feel?

Electrical stimulation is delivered via 2 or 4 electrodes, which are placed on the skin.  Depending on the treatment protocol  and the device used, the sensation will vary from a mild tingling to a pulsing or throbbing sensation.  Because the patient controls the level of stimulation, the stimulation should never be uncomfortable and is generally reported to be a pleasant, massage-like feeling.

5.  Can I treat more than one area at the same time?

You can only treat one area at the same time with the Alivio IF4, as interferential therapy requires the use of all four electrodes.  However, with the Alivio STX and the Alivio RxTENS you can treat two areas at the same time with two electrodes in each area.  Refer to directions and protocols supplied with those devices for usage instructions.

6.  How long do I need to treat before I start to get results?

This varies from patient to patient.  When the electrical stimulator is used as directed, including settings and frequency of treatments, many patients will begin to get relief within the first week.  Some cases take a little longer, but it is important to give the therapy at least 30 days, using as directed, to determine whether the electrical stimulator will benefit you.

7. Will my health insurance or work comp carrier cover this therapy?

Most health insurances, including Medicare, will cover prescribed electrical stimulators. While some insurers will not cover IFC, most will cover transcutaneous and neuromuscular stimulators.  Work comp carriers usually cover all forms of electrical stimulation, when prescribed as medically necessary by your physician. Also, many auto insurances provide coverage of prescribed electrical stimulators.

8.  Who should I contact with questions or problems?

For any problems or questions related to use of the device, including how to operate the stimulator, equipment problems, supply needs or any concerns you have as to whether the therapy is appropriate for you, do not hesitate to contact Alivio at 1(800)285-1025.  If you have any concerns or questions about your medical condition, please contact your physician.
